Turkey releases Hadith Project; Prophet Mohammad's sayings for the 21st century, 6 years in the making

Turkish religious leaders and theologians received anxious calls asking about Western media reports they would edit a "radical" new set of hadiths, scriptures that are second only to the Koran in Islam.

"Will you write a new Koran next?" one irate Arab scholar asked a baffled Turkish academic.

The new work, finally ready after six years in the making, is nothing like the 95 Theses in which Martin Luther condemned practices in the Roman Catholic Church and launched the Protestant Reformation.

Instead, its 100 authors have selected a few hundred of the about 17,000 reported quotes from Mohammad to examine Islamic views on God, faith and life in terms that the average modern Turk can understand.

"We don't live in the 20th century anymore," said Mehmet Ozafsar, director of the project and vice-president of Ankara's Religious Affairs Directorate, or Diyanet, a state agency.

"We needed a new work with Islamic beliefs in the perspective of today's culture."

Sura At-Takathur :

1. The piling up diverts you,
2. Until you visit the graves.
3. Verily, but you shall soon know.
4. Again, verily but you shall soon know.
5. Verily, were you to know with certainty,
6. You will certainly see the Hell-fire!
7. Again, you will see it with certainty of sight!
8. Then shall you be questioned that Day concerning pleasure.

Know Your Soul, Know Yourself

Know Your Soul, Know Yourself

By uzzie on from muslimmatters.org

The idea of curbing the soul's passions and of seeking to purify it is reiterated in the following hadith: 'There are three acts that, whoever does them will experience the sweetness of faith: one who worships God alone, for there is no true god but Him; one who pays his yearly zakat on his wealth with an agreeable soul – not giving a weak, decrepit nor diseased animal, but giving from his middle wealth, for God does not ask for the best of your wealth and nor orders to give the worst of it; and one who purifies his soul.' A man inquired: What is purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs)? He replied: 'To know that God is with him wherever he may be.'1
